12/23/10

Hello, Jakarta!

So yeah, I went to the capital city on Dec 13-15, not on holiday but to fulfill a 'secret mission' heheh..

I boarded Mandala Air, booked online, one month ahead, paid for IDR 960K for a SUB-JKT round ticket. It could have been cheaper if you didn't opt 'fly carbon free' and choose your seat. I chose window seat cos I love the view of floating clouds, which I didn't see much of cos the weather was sunny and the sky was clear.

Is it just me or anyone else think that the view is better on the right hand side window than on the left hand side window? Cos I always get to see better view when I sit by the right hand side window.. :)

Surprisingly, I met a familiar face onboard next to my seat. She was my classmate in IALF last year and we had a good chit-chat.. :) She was worried knowing that I was travelling alone and told me to use ONLY Blue Bird taxi..

Btw, why was everyone worried about me going alone to Jakarta?

I mean, it's only Jakarta. I've travelled to five other countries in my early twenties and no one was as worried as now. Though I didn't travel alone, but most of the times I wandered in cities by myself. Okay la, not really by myself, usually accompanied by one or two friends.. But this time I'm 24 y.o. already, oh please... I was going to surf someone's couch, but Mom was extremely against it and paid me a two-nights stay in a nice hotel instead. "Perhaps somewhere else, but not in Indonesia," said her.

Yes, mom... I don't mind. At all.
Hahaha..

I arrived at Terminal 3 Soekarno-Hatta Int'l Airport, the newly-built terminal, I guess? Cos everything still looked so new and clean and well-maintained heheh... I was afraid of 'black taxis' but here I can order my taxi from an authorized booth. I picked Blue Bird and was given a receipt. This receipt was to be passed to a Blue Bird's staff on the taxi station, where I waited for it. The booth was near the exit door after the baggage claim hall btw.

This is the first trip to Jakarta after 15 years, and my impression about this city remains the same.

Crowded.
Crowded.
Crowded.
Crowded.
Crowded.

It's not 'crowded' in a nice way. Because Hong Kong is crowded, too, but I love it. I love waking up early to see people rushing in the morning, to see some of them has just finished their walk in the garden, some of them are grabbing their breakfast and rushing to their work, people queuing on bus stops and subways are full as well.
But Jakarta was not like that. It's crowded in the way that can make you go mad. Upon arrival, I was trapped with my taxi in a massive traffic jam......... on a HIGHWAY!! Yes baby, you read it right.. =.=  I checked Google Maps and found out the airport to my hotel was supposed to be only 30-mins-driving away. In fact, I spent about 1.5 hour!! I was lucky I wasn't the one driving at that time.. xD

I stayed at Lumire Hotel (ex Aston Atrium Hotel). It's nice and I had the whole king-sized bed shared with a hunk only for myself woot woot~~ The check-in process took like forever.. Since I arrived at 11am, I left my luggage and went straight to the dental school to meet a friend there.

Arrived back at the hotel @3pm or so.

Ady picked me up in the hotel about 1.5 hours later and since I wanted to visit Kota Tua, he suggested us to go there. But as natural as in Jakarta, we got trapped in a traffic jam!! A massive one. It's almost 5pm already. Feeling hopeless of not being able to reach the place before sunset and afraid of being trapped even further, we made a detour to Mangga Dua Square and spent few hours there until the traffic jam subsided hahaha.. After the rush hour ended, I tried to contact my friends, asking for suggestions about sightseeing places we could check out in the late afternoon, but they had no idea besides malls or eating places hahaha.. So he drove to another mall to meet his friends there. Practically, on day one we didn't go nowhere and I learned how to get used to the traffic jam lol~

Guess what place we visited on day two?

Deng deng deng........

It's the TAMAN MINI INDONESIA INDAH!!!!!!
Omg... suddenly I felt sooooo 'Orde Baru' and the image of Soeharto (our former president) flashed in my mind hahahahaa....xDD

It's actually Ady's idea!!

Previously we had these options: Kota Tua, Ragunan Zoo, and Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII). I've only ever visited TMII and that's when I was about 9 y.o. On the other hand, he was very curious cos he had never been there. In the end, we agreed to visit TMII instead of the first two options. When he first mentioned TMII though, I was a little skeptical. As long as I remembered, it didn't impress a 9-years-old me at all, how could it impress me now? But I did a mini research and read some positive reviews. Moreover they had renewed their logo, and usually a company's logo renewal was associated with major changes, right? Why not give it a shot? Who knows it's actually better than 15 years before? I got curious, too.

The journey took longer than we had expected, got deceived by a tricky sign board so we took the wrong way too.. But after one hour, we made it to that place.

Wow.. IT'S BIG!

That's our impression before we actually reached the entrance gate.
The entrance gate was quite pretty with intricate design (if I didn't mis-notice heheh) so I got a little more optimistic. It could have been better than I had imagined, I thought.

The ticket was IDR 10K per person CMIIW. Cheap!

It's a big complex exhibiting various traditional houses of Indonesia tribes, surrounding a pond of miniature of Indonesia's islands. If you can't get what I mean, check this link for yourselves la cos I can not explain it better hahaha.. Have you ever visited The Window of The World (世界之窗) in Shenzhen, China? TMII's concept is similar to that, not as grand of course.. and minus the pond perhaps.. hahah.

Since we're here to take pictures, it's best to explore the garden of eden on foot, isn't it?
We asked for a map from the information center (it looked like a dead-office) so we knew where to start from. It was cloudy, drizzling, and the weather was very humid.

We made a walk and reached the first traditional house I didn't know its name.

Hi, house!

I thought we're only going to see the house's facade, imagine how boring could it be? So I was excited when I found out we could actually get inside the house! Wow, curiosity level raised even higher..

.
.
.
But the door was locked and no one was around.

Till I spotted a cleaning service staff and he told me that the staff was taking a lunch break and would be back after 1pm. That meant one hour later.

Crap..  =.=

We snapped some pictures of the house from outside, then moved around the neighborhood.. snapped some again, then walked to the next few houses-I-also-can-not-recall-their-names... =.=

On our way we saw a golf-car like vehicle which offered a ride for IDR 3K per person. We thought if we had reached half of the whole route and got too tired to continue walking, we could ride this vehicle.

To the second house.
To the third house.

O hai house, what's your name again?

Lucky! The door was opened and finally we got to see how the inside of the house looked like!
Well.... the excitement stayed only for few first minutes. Remember that I said the weather was very humid? It felt worse inside the house!!! I was wearing a loose short-sleeved t-shirt and still sweating like crazy...  Why didn't they install some ACs??! I was busier wiping off sweat than enjoying the house interior. The air inside was musty and the room was poor lit.... Inside, they also exhibited traditional costumes, house appliances, some pictures of local heroes, weaponries, texts explaining history etc.

I was sure my pupils were dilating to its MAXIMUM aperture, NOT because I felt excited looking at each of them, but ultimately because of the poor lighting!! Geeezzzz......

OMG I kinda feel that what I write here is ruining our tourism promotion effort lololol.. XD

To the fourth house.

Met the Seulawah, the first Indonesia's carrier airplane. I don't know it's the authentic one or just a replica, but above all, I had no idea why they placed it here amongst the traditional houses.. Should be in an aviation museum, shouldn't it?

On the way to the fifth house.....

Sweat.
Sweat.
Sweat.

Ohhh couldn't stand this anymore.... WE FINALLY GAVE UP!!!
I was sssooooooooo relieved when Ady suggested to go back to the car and just finish the route by driving mwahahahahhhh~~

Proven that it had not changed at all since 15 years ago yeah!!! xDDD

When we first arrived I wondered why it's so quite and desolate there, Ady replied that it was weekday so it's normal if only few people came. We did see some groups of school student at the museums, but within the traditional houses exhibition area we only noticed no more than 10 people. It was very very lonely and sad there, and now I know why!

It's just not interesting!

Visiting the first house was interesting.. but after few ones, it's just dead-boring!! No attractions at all, plain boredom!

And the song they played through the speakers, can you guess??

It's a song by BROERY MARANTIKA!!!!! *faints*

I do not dislike him though I'm not a fan as well, but out of all songs in the country, why Broery's??

Very. Nostalgic. TYVM.

I think it'd be better if they played either national or traditional songs since the whole complex is supposed to show off the various cultures this country has. And I could be happily singing along cos I still remember about  15-16 songs from various parts of Indonesia mwahahahah.....

Oh yeah, almost forget to tell you that TMII has museums, too. You can go to the website for more infos cos we didn't check 'em out... The museums had a lot more visitors (like I said earlier, school students) than the houses, so perhaps they're much more worth going..

Perhaps.

Eh, we did check the Istana Anak (or The Castle of Indonesia Children)..... but from outside only! The buiding's exterior looked kinda interesting. If you want to get inside the castle you need to buy a ticket for IDR 5K per person.

Cheap, not???

It's too fucking cheap that I keep wondering where they earn their money from to keep the whole complex running. You know.. Houses, museums, buildings, all need maintenance.. The staffs also need salary.. And who pays for electricity, water, and phone bills?

No wonder they don't install air conditioner there.. *nods head*

Well... I don't intend my post to discourage anyone from paying a visit to it hahahahaa.... Seriously I've read some positive reviews of it. Perhaps it's just me, perhaps it's just the weather. Different variables lead to different results, right? I saw children were mostly happy and having fun ;)

Spent the rest of the day in Pondok Indah Mall (I like this mall very much) and fX, and that concluded my trip!!

Phewww.... writing a long post is tiring....

So, do I like this city, you ask?

Well... It's only three days, how could I answer that? But like it or not, if I have to move there then all I can do is coping with the situations. U know, now back in this town, I somehow drive more patiently and even not get provoked in a traffic jam as easily as before. Cos I know it is really nothing... hahaha.
Imil also posted on her blog about her mad experience while visiting this city hahaha.. I was lucky I didn't encounter her situation, thanks to Ady, the great company and driver, too!! Hahahaha... Hey buddy, I hope you've recovered from flu already!! Come to Surabaya and let's go to the mountain! :D

4/22/10

a weekend in Semarang (pics loaded)

Nah finally had my time to post this. Am very lazy for days cos I feel not up for anything. I know I should be studying for licensing examination, but I surrender already into laziness haha.. ah, will find the right time for that. When I'm in the mood for it, studying will be efficient and less painful rite.. *wink wink*

As you know (or not), I went to Semarang on April 9-11.. I joined Mom. She went there on a business purpose, while I clearly on nothing but leisure purpose :P I thought the trip was cancelled as she had not confirmed the ticket till Wed afternoon, so I didn't have time to manage to meet fellow Semarang CSers. Nvm la, as long as I could skip the lame work here I would still go.. :D

I was mad excited as she told me we went by train!! As I posted on my status, this was my very first train experience within the last 14 years. As lame as it sounded, people on the station glanced at me with weird expression but who cared anyway? Showing off my happiness also can not mah?

Having been asking my brother who had traveled to Yogyakarta before by train also about the train experience, but I still didn't want to put any expectations as you know our public transportations and services sucked and perhaps, so did the train.

Proven wrong. Here are some random piccies from the trip.

The leg rooms are verrryy spacious. Me likey, unlike the airplane's one..

I was even excited to see the railucy guard dressed like that. Exactly as I imagined when I read Murder on the Orient Express hehe.. Corny, I know :P

Leng lui with her train ticket :P

Arrived at Stasiun Tawang already! So pretty old building :)

Isn't the train station pretty? In a nutshell, I think Semarang is kinda cute.. little city with many Dutch buildings, just like Surabaya but I guess they have more? Not?

Because we didn't rent a car, we transported to here and there by taxi. I was blessed, my taxi driver was so so so nice. He was smart, talked a lot with him during the trip.. He showed me best places for food and sightseeing and drove me there.. A taxi driver could be your best guide hehe.. :)

Didn't really get to many places actually due to the short time.. First stop was Pagoda Watugong. No idea where the exact location is :P As I can remember, it was about 20 mins driving from the city (the driver told me that) and we drove thru highway as well.. so it must be quite on the rural area I think. The place is named after the stone that resembles a gong located on that site.. didn't take that picture though. It looks like this.

I really wanted to enter the pagoda and shot above, but the board said it's restricted :(

I also managed to see the famous Sam Poo Kong Temple (三保), probably the biggest Chinese temple in Semarang.. Mom told me when she was pregnant with me, my jiu jiu went to this temple for countless time praying for a son for her because he knew her sister wanted a baby boy.. But no matter how many times he threw the sio pweh kept turning both upside or downside haha.. Poor jiu jiu got asked so many times by his friends for coming so frequently to this temple xD

Entrance fee costs IDR 10K if I'm not mistaken.. Sorry, can't really remember, poor memory.. =.= If you're foreign tourists, they charge you more.

The sun started to set when I was finished taking pics and I was quite worn out already.. Next day went for a short walking in Kota Lama.

The small dome behind the trees was Stasiun Tawang.

Gereja Blenduk

There's nothing much to see in the second days.. Half because practically there are not much sightseeing spots in Semarang and half because we spent that day eating, got invited for delicious meals by mom's colleague.. Oh I loovee bussiness trip hahaha.. ;P Had delicious lunch in Kampung Laut and suki dinner in Macao Supreme nyomm nyomm.. *salivating* Definitely want to visit this city again in the future, as I didn't get to taste all of their foods :D

expecting Yogyakarta

Teehee… I’m super extra very hoping that my brother gets accepted in UGM. Not only is because he wants to study there too bad and has no other options, but also because it means that I’ll be travelling frequently to Yogyakarta and the surrounding cities without worrying about the accomodation so it saves a lot of money hehe :P

While he’s very nervous about the exam, let this wicked byootiful sistah arrange which places she’ll be visiting there xD The last time I went there was on a family trip about…..TWELVE years back!!! Booo, nuff said why I’m getting so excited this time hehe. I am going with Momo and brother but I'm pretty sure that they won't want to go around with me as they don't like travelling zzz.... =.= I already start my list and it's very annoying if she still doesn't permit me to go anywhere I like. Oh come on, your darling daughter is going 24 this year and she still needs permission?

Meanwhile, for an I-also-don’t-know-why reason, I’m bound to this song and can’t let go myself from it. Been repeating the same song since yesterday night constantly and still not bored yet :D

pls don't mind the stupid karaoke-style mv ;P

And yes, who knows a metalcore band can sing such a beautiful song like this? Major love ♥

HK day TWO

On phone, my 姑婆 said that she would arrive at our hotel at 10am so we quickly headed back to the hotel. She arrived at about 10.30 and quickly took us for a walk to Discovery Plaza. It was located around the MTR station I think, but we walked for quite long. Just before we reached the entry gate, Henry called her and asked us to change direction to his clinic hahaha... It's so okay la.. :)

Though we were on phone the night before and I'd met his mother twice when she came to Surabaya, this was the first time I met him. He was nice on phone and even nicer in real life. And he looked like a real dentist maaannnn.... Patients will happily seek him for dental care while I have to put all efforts to convince them receiving treatment from me haha... His clinic was very very neat and tidy. It's not that small, though her mother kept telling that it's small.. for a private clinic, I think the size is just right.. I wanna own a clinic like that as well in the future :)

We stayed there until lunch and they brought us to yumcha! When he spelled the word yumcha, I was like going to smile from ear to ear, but I mind my own manner la.. it's such a pain-relief to our awful macaroni breakfast.. I believe that HK has the best dimsum all over the world, and its cuisine is awesome too.. You just have to go with right person so you can order the right dishes.. Me can't read the menus so that's why we mostly ended up with wrong order.. well.. beggars can't choose..

I was going to meet Jack from HKU in the afternoon, so we separated ways after lunch. My sister and I decided to spend some hours in Central as we're going to take taxi from Central to PPDH. Central was like a shopping superblock, mainly occupied with branded stuffs though you can still find cheaper brands store like Giordano or Bossini and other small designer boutiques. But our only destination was Sasa!!! There's the biggest Sasa store over there, we think so, as other Sasa stores we came in in MongKok and Tsim Tsa Shui were just smaller than this one.

HK day ONE

Getting lazier to blog nowadays.. it is not as interesting as before, and there's problem with either my modem or Speedy cos the speed runs reaaaalllyyyyy slow bleahhh...

So few days to spend there, so many places I wanted to go.

After arriving at the airport I decided to ask someone on the visitor center and he suggested us to go to our hotel by bus cos it's much more convenient and definitely cheaper. I planned to go by MTR though, as it's faster, but who wanted to lug around big luggagge from platform to platform btw? So I agreed with him. Taking bus A31 from Airport to Tsuen Wan only cost HKD17.8 per person. The journey was about 60 mins long. He said that Dorsett Far East Hotel was very visible from the bus, so we would be able to notice it before hopped off the bus.
I regretted not to take notes how many bus stops before our stop, and we didn't know at which stop we should go down then hahaha.. After 45 mins, I tried to locate where we were. The bus keep on driving like mad that once I found a big building, like a mansion or plaza, the bus just passed it by before I could find it on the map... My sister made a wise decision to ask a local guy sitting behind us, and thankfully he spoke English really well. He wasn't sure about our hotel location but he asked us to get down at the same bus stop as him cos even if we continued our bus trip, no one would be able to help us. When the bus door opened, I was relieved to see Cityplaza, which was only few metres away from our hotel, hahaha... Crap. I think the guy on visitor centre forgot to tell us that the hotel's name was only visible to passengers sitting on the left side. We sat on the right side thus we didn't see any.. =.=

It was almost 6pm when we arrived at the hotel.

The hotel was niccceeeee..... :) As expected, the room was very small (as any other room in HK, I think), the bathroom was even smaller haha.. But it's very clean, the staffs were helpful and spoke English too.. I booked it online, room rate was about HKD 340 plus 10% tax which was cheap. Of course, it's abit far from downtown area.. but I didn't mind as the MTR was fast and cheap also. With the same price in downtown area you could only get a hostel's room. The hotel we stayed in was a 3 stars hotel :) And because it's located in residential area, it's more quiet and homy too. Early in the morning, you could see people having exercise in the nearby park, highschoolers queuing on public light bus, parents taking their kids to schools, and office guys and girls having breakfast in chan teng (餐體) A good way to observe local's life hehe...

Our first dinner was in a chan teng near the hotel. The weather was quite cold and we're looking for something hot for dinner. The restaurant smelt good from the street and it's pretty crowded so I though their foods must be good too. I couldn't read the menu so I asked the young girl on cashier to help me haha.. Really, my Chinese was quite useless over there. I think they didn't always use the same character to explain one thing as in Taiwan. I am used to Taiwanese's style and I thought I could also survived in HK but I was wrong. With the help of the girl, we picked up something like ramen and sliced pork and egg, haha... Didn't know the name, but it's delicious!!! The next day was different. We tried other restaurant in farther block, it looked like it served roasted goose. It displayed pictures of goose dishes, so I said to my sister, "Wow. These look yummy, let's go in!!"

I didn't know that it didn't serve roasted goose in the morning. Apparently, almost all restaurants in HK serve different menus for breakfast time. The goose restaurant we came in, served regular egg and toast for breakfast. This time, we picked up menu with the help of the waiter guy, the only one who spoke English in the restaurant.

It should be only bread toast, scrambled egg, and bacon, plus lemon tea. But in fact, they gave us additional plain hot tea and a HUGE bowl of macaroni with salted vegetables and minced pork!!! Even me couldn't finish them up! Later I discovered that people here eat much more than our standards hehe... Eventually, the macaroni was left untouched and I didn't have gut to come back in the afternoon to taste their roasted goose. Seriously, the pictures looked very appetizing and that's a pity.... =.=""

Feeling so full, we headed back to the hotel and waited for our 姑婆 to pick us up...

HK love story

Hai hai hai.. yours truly had arrived home safely on last Sunday and now enjoying free days before departure to Bali on next week mwahahaha... November is my travel month for sure hehe :)

About Hong Kong, I AM NOT SATISFIED AT ALL!!!!! C'mon, only FOUR days, how come I got satisfied?? I wanna stay FOREVER there!!!! I wanna move move there owww.. It was Autumn when I visited so the cool breeze felt very comfortable esp if you compared to Surabaya's hot weather which almost kills me everyday due to the heavy sweating.. I might die of dehydration y'noe!!

My new camera works so well, as expected from a Canon!! I've uploaded some pictures on my Facebook account if you want to check it there.. Sorry, I can't post the same pictures here as the connection dropped down =.= It's proven that a good camera aids in making good pictures. No need for heavy editing, just tweaking the color and apply lens correction filter to make the pictures look more dramatic! Awesome!!! Sure it's worth the price, how many times have I been telling you this?? Ahahaha....

Met my 'uncle' who's also a dentist in HK.. I should have called him 'uncle' cos he is on Mom's generation but he's only 30 something and mind being called as uncle haha.. Soo nice la! He explained a lot about MDS programme in HKU and now I'm getting more confused as I don't know what to choose wtf haha.. I like his clinic btw, small and neat and chic.. I so want to own a clinic like him in the future time! But I imagine that working in private practice is boring though you can earn a lot from that..

Met Jack Jichao also!!!! I'm soooo sorry we only could meet for one day! I only managed to visit the PPDH (and stupidely didn't take any photos there.. wtf was wrong with my brain at that time?!!?!?!?!!!) Next time I wanna visit the main campus.. saw from several photos that it's an old building so gotta be more interesting.. However, PPDH is greattt!! Making me dislike my campus even more.. That is what they call a teaching hospital maannn!!! Don't call RSGM a teaching hospital also.. I don't even dare to pee in the toilet as I might get urinary tract infection =.=

to be continued..

11/4/09

less than 12 hours

Tee hee.. yours truly is going MIA for 4 days starting from tomorrow!!

11/3/09

less than 48 hrs!

OMG I'm freaking lazy to pack luggage~!!!! Why should I bring luggage huh, even don't know what to bring!! It's supposed to be Fall now, regular temp is about 23-28 C, but just now Jack told me that it's dropping to 17 C these days... @_@ I so don't want to bring clothes here and buy them there hahah.. I already prepared the maps, complete with colorful tags, but almost forget to print hotel's name and address whoahahaa... wanna get lost there or what?? xD
